Recent Job: EV Charger, Lighting and Earthing Upgrades at a Chatswood Home

Service: EV Charger Installation

Location: Chatswood, Lower North Shore

A repeat Captain Cook Electrical customer wanted to add home EV charging and update several lights at this Chatswood home.

The job included a new power supply for the EV charger, four replacement light fittings and new earthing at the property.

New cable and safety protection were installed for the charger before the finished electrical work was tested.

What Electrical Upgrades Were Needed?

The main upgrade was the installation of a home EV charger.

The customer also wanted four existing fanlights removed and replaced with new light fittings.

The job included an earthing upgrade as well, with a new earth stake and new earth wiring connected back to the switchboard.

An earth stake is a metal rod installed in the ground. It forms part of the home’s electrical safety system and helps provide a safe path for electricity if a fault occurs.

Together, the work covered the home’s EV charging, lighting and earthing in one job.

What Was Needed for the EV Charger?

The EV charger needed its own power supply from the switchboard.

For this job, new 10mm cable was run from the switchboard to the charger location.

A separate switch was installed so power to the charger could be safely turned off when needed.

Captain Cook also installed an RCBO, which is a combined safety switch and circuit breaker. It helps protect the new charger circuit if there is an electrical fault or too much current flowing through it.

The customer-supplied EV charger was then connected and mounted on the exterior wall.

How Was the EV Charger Installed?

New cable was run from the switchboard to the charger.

The separate shut-off switch and the new safety switch and circuit breaker were installed as part of the setup.

The charger was then fixed to the wall and connected to its new power supply.

Once the installation was finished, the charger and electrical work were tested.

This gave the customer a fixed charging point at home with its own power supply and safety protection.

What Other Electrical Work Was Completed?

Four existing fanlights were removed and replaced with customer-supplied light fittings.

The old fittings were taken down and the existing cables were prepared before the new lights were installed.

The completed lighting work was then tested.

The job also included a new earth stake and earth wiring.

A new copper earth rod was installed in the ground near the switchboard and connected back to the electrical system.

The safety switches and earthing were then tested after the work was completed.

What Was the Result?

The Chatswood home now has a dedicated EV charging point with its own power supply and safety protection.

Four replacement light fittings were also installed around the home.

The new earth stake and wiring gave the property a renewed earth connection, and the completed electrical work was tested.

The one job delivered three practical upgrades: home EV charging, updated lighting and new earthing.

What Could Have Happened Without the Work?

Without the EV charger installation, the home would still have lacked the dedicated charging setup the customer wanted.

The four existing fanlights would also have remained in place instead of being replaced with the new fittings.

The earthing work was the more important safety part of the job.

Without the new earth stake and wiring, the home would have continued relying on its previous earthing setup.

Earthing helps electricity move safely away if there is a fault. Without a suitable earth connection, there can be a greater risk of electric shock if something goes wrong.
